REMINDER: CO Begins a Carryout Bag Fee on Jan. 1, 2023

Invest in reusable carryout bags & save, but don't forget to keep them clean.

If you haven't heard the news, there are big changes coming to the shopper's experience in the State of Colorado thanks to House Bill 21-1162, which was enacted in 2021 by the Colorado General Assembly.

What you need to know:
Starting Jan. 1, 2023, stores in the State of Colorado will begin charging 10 cents per bag for any recycled paper carryout bag or a single-use plastic carryout bag used to carryout your paid merchandise from the store. This means, unless you bring a reusable bag to carry out your merchandise, you'll be paying an extra fee for every bag you use to carryout the products you're purchasing. This will impact pickup orders as well, so plan ahead!

To avoid the fee consider investing in an array of reusable bags and containers that you can cycle through to have on hand for shopping trips as well as to account for bag cleaning and drying in-between grocery runs. Think about having easily wipeable bins or laundry baskets in the car for pick up orders in addition to easily cleanable reusable bags. Remember that these bins and bags will be getting dirty on every grocery run and can easily grow mold in addition to picking up germs and dirt from the store or pick up order. Create a cleaning schedule for your reusable bins and bags.

Not sure where to start on the cleaning process? Hop on to the Cleaning Institute's website for cleaning tips and cleaning product recommendations, or use their handy printout below.
